Treating Personality Disorders: Understanding the Mental Health Condition & Treatment Program Options at Excel Behavioral Health

Personality disorders aren’t a choice. They’re not a phase you can just snap out of. They’re ingrained, often lifelong patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that can affect every area of your life. They can warp your sense of self, color your relationships, and shape the way you relate to the world.

For many, the frustration, isolation, and confusion can be crushing. You can feel like you don’t quite fit, like the deck is stacked against you, and you don’t know where to turn or if lasting help even exists. If you feel that way, know you’re not alone and you’re not beyond help. At Excel Behavioral Health, we understand the challenges and hopelessness that can come with a personality disorder, and we are here to help with our personality disorders treatment in New Jersey.

With a combination of evidence-based and holistic therapies, coping skills, support, and a space to build trust and learn how to be whole, healthy individuals, you can — and will — recover.

Personality disorders are not an end—they’re a challenge to overcome and an obstacle on the path of a fulfilling, meaningful life. The right treatment program can provide the support and tools you need to not just live with the condition but to thrive in spite of it.

Signs and Symptoms

What Are Personality Disorders? Signs, Symptoms, & Common Types

Personality disorders are a type of mental health condition marked by inflexible and often unhealthy patterns of thinking, feeling, and interacting with others. These patterns are persistent and pervasive, often leading to difficulties in multiple areas of life and distress for both the individual and people around them.

Types of Personality Disorders

There are several types of personality disorders, with each type associated with its own set of common signs and symptoms. Some of the most common include:

  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD): A disorder characterized by intense, unstable emotions; impulsive behavior; chronic feelings of emptiness; and a fear of abandonment.
  • Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD): A disorder associated with a lack of empathy and disregard for the rights of others, often demonstrated through manipulation, lying, and violating the law.
  • Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD): A condition marked by a grandiose sense of self-importance, need for excessive admiration, and a lack of empathy.
  • Avoidant Personality Disorder (AVPD): A disorder characterized by extreme shyness, avoidance of social interactions, and feelings of inadequacy.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD): An extreme preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control at the expense of flexibility and openness.

Personality Disorders Treatment in New Jersey

At Excel Behavioral Health, we believe there’s no one solution that fits all when it comes to healing. Different diagnoses require different approaches, and the same can be said for different people, even with the same disorder. That’s why our personality disorders programs in New Jersey offer a full continuum of care, from residential to intensive outpatient programs, so that we can meet each client where they’re at and guide them back to the other side.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment is a good fit for those experiencing extreme symptoms, mental health crises, or those without the support systems at home to continue care. In a residential setting, clients stay at the facility 24/7 to focus on intensive recovery programming while having their basic needs (food, shelter, clothing, etc.) provided for them in a structured setting. In addition to providing safety and support, inpatient care is extremely helpful for stabilizing more extreme or severe symptoms of the disorder while creating the foundation for long-term recovery.

Partial Hospitalization Program

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the next step down from inpatient care, so to speak. Like inpatient care, PHP is an intensive form of care, but rather than staying on site 24/7, clients spend most of their day at the treatment center taking part in one-on-one therapy, group work, and skills-building workshops, and then return home in the evening. PHP is an extremely rigorous form of care that requires a lot of stamina, but it has the benefit of allowing individuals to apply the lessons of treatment directly to their home life.

Intensive Outpatient Program

For clients who are at a point in their recovery where they are able to assume the responsibilities of their daily lives—work, school, family obligations, etc.—but still require intensive care, intensive outpatient programming can be a good middle ground between PHP and traditional outpatient counseling. Clients typically have to attend several sessions a week, which may include individual and group therapy as well as skills-building workshops.

Standard Outpatient Program

Outpatient counseling is a good fit for individuals who have received higher levels of care, those with milder symptoms that don’t require the intensity of an IOP, or those seeking help but can still function normally in their day-to-day lives. Outpatient care is more limited in scope, but can still provide weekly or biweekly therapy sessions that are an invaluable resource for building resilience, practicing healthy coping mechanisms, and maintaining personal growth.

Medication

Not all treatment is therapy, and for many with personality disorders, medication is an important part of the care plan. Medication can help stabilize symptoms, manage underlying mental health issues, and reduce some of the more extreme side effects like impulsivity, mania, or depression.

Tele-Health Programs

This program offers video visits for individuals who cannot attend in person or prefer remote care. It maintains the same clinical standards while adapting the delivery method. Telehealth can complement in-person sessions during transitions or when scheduling challenges arise.

Specialized Therapies

Therapy is the backbone of personality disorder treatment. At Excel Behavioral Health, we offer a variety of modalities, including:

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): A short-term, focused form of therapy that is highly effective at identifying and then changing negative or distorted thinking patterns that lead to unhealthy behavior.
  • DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): A specific form of CBT that combines aspects of both Eastern mindfulness and Western psychological therapy, and is particularly effective at helping people with emotion regulation and distress tolerance skills.
Psychodynamic Therapy: A form of talk therapy that takes a deep dive into one’s past in order to reveal and help heal behavioral patterns and coping mechanisms developed long ago.
