What to Expect When You Enter Treatment at Excel

At the Excel Center, we know that seeking treatment for addiction is not something that is ever taken lightly. People typically first meet us when they are in a very vulnerable state, usually having attempted to stop on their own multiple times. We understand that often people are confused about what treatment entails, how the admissions process works, and what treatment looks like.

The good news is that receiving the help you or your loved one deserves is much easier than most people think. We have been treating addiction since 2012, and we pride ourselves on keeping it simple. We understand that addiction is a disease – we know that addicts are just people who need help. We are uniquely situated in New Jersey to deliver that, through compassionate guidance and therapy.

Why Treatment Matters

Many people who are in active addiction do not understand why they cannot stop. Our clients typically arrive at Excel Center, having tried to stop of their own accord multiple times. This can lead to feelings of guilt and shame. Addiction is not a moral failing – it is a recognized disease. Prolonged exposure to substances alters the physical make-up of the brain’s reward pathways. This means that people will compulsively seek the substance or behavior they are addicted to, despite the negative effects it may be having on their life. Addiction also greatly diminishes the power of choice. Many people find that their behavior in active addiction is very far removed from their usual moral compass.

We don’t just look at the substance or behavior our client is engaging in – we look at the reasons why our clients are using them. No two people are ever the same, and as such, no two addictions are the same. We approach treatment with an open-minded, judgment-free, and goal-oriented attitude.

01 Call Our Office At (973) 352-0845 If we’re unavailable, expect a callback within an hour. Give us a short description of why you or your loved one needs treatment. Our call center staff are all highly trained and can guarantee your utmost confidentiality. We use this information so that we can schedule an appointment with the most appropriate Excel clinician. We know that time is of the essence when treating addiction. Appointments are usually scheduled within 24 hours, although in some cases a same-day appointment will be available. If you are planning to file with your insurance, please give us your insurance details prior to the appointment. This allows us to verify coverage and work out the personal costs and what the insurance covers. If you are self-funding your entire treatment with us, please see our dedicated FAQ page.
02 Please Complete Our New Client Forms Before Arrival To give to your Admissions Coordinator when you arrive. Your initial assessment takes about 90 minutes and covers what substances you’re using, how and how often, any medications, your treatment history, and why you’re seeking help now. We’ll also ask about your health, medical history, and family and social history. Everything you share is strictly confidential, and assessments are done one-on-one, so you can speak freely even if a loved one came with you. By the end, you’ll have an expert treatment recommendation and your first appointment scheduled with your primary therapist. If another provider is a better fit for you than Excel, we’ll make sure you get a prompt referral.
03 Your Primary Therapist Will Work With You To Develop A Unique Treatment Plan At Excel Center, we offer a wide range of therapy and therapeutic activities. This isn’t a one-way street – you will get an opportunity to say what you want to, and what you don’t want to do. We understand that people change throughout treatment, and as such, our treatment plans are flexible. Just because you opted for one style of treatment doesn’t mean you have to stick to it for the whole time you are under our care. As you progress through your treatment plan, your primary therapist will work with you to make sure that you are making progress.
