Adults in Mid-Life
We specialize in helping mid-life adults reach sobriety.
At Excel Center, we recognize that addiction and mental health problems do not discriminate when it comes to age. As such, neither do we. We offer a comprehensive and bespoke recovery program that is tailor-made to your needs. We understand that the challenges one can face in Mid-Life can differ greatly from those who face youth; whilst the symptoms may be similar the underlying causes can be different.
There is a mistaken belief that people only develop an addiction at a young age. However, that is not the case and people can be vulnerable to developing an addiction at any point in their life. Many people find that they develop a drinking problem later in life, with 10-15% of people starting to drink heavily in older age. The opioid epidemic which has swept through New Jersey has affected everyone, from teens to people in their 60s. This has led to many people who did not previously describe themselves as being addicts needing to seek residential treatment.
Excel Center understands that addiction is heavily impacted by an individual’s life circumstances and experiences. This is why we deliver a bespoke, non-judgmental service, which is carefully tailored to a client’s personal needs. This can include but is not limited to, the use of family therapy, behavioral therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. This holistic approach in which we treat the entire person, rather than the symptoms of the disease is what makes us unique in the world of addiction treatment.
At Excel Center, we recognize that everyone’s recovery journey starts differently. We also know that for those in their mid-lives this can come with its own unique additional problems. Frequently, we treat those who are married or divorced and have children and successful careers. We also understand the pain and guilt which we encounter in many middle-aged addicts coming through our doors.

Many people who are in active addiction do not understand why they cannot stop. Most people are not aware of the biochemical changes that addiction can bring around in the brain; it physically alters the make-up of the brain’s reward pathways. This leads to compulsively seeking the substance or behavior to which the person is addicted. This compulsion leads us to actions that are far removed from our usual moral standing; at Excel, we understand that this is the disease of addiction rather than a moral failing of the person.
We also understand that not everyone can simply walk away from their lives and live in a treatment center, although we do recommend this for our most serious cases. We know that people have jobs to attend and children to look after; this is why we offer bespoke outpatient packages that are tailored to the needs of our clients. This enables our clients to remain as engaged as they have to be in their outside life, whilst also receiving high-end drug counseling and treatment.
We also offer aftercare packages, as we recognize that returning to one’s previous life can come with its own burdens and triggers. People may be moving back into the house which they associate with addiction, seeing people they used with, and facing people who they feel they have let down. This is why we enable our clients to remain engaged in our services, while tapering down the level of care they receive as and when we collectively decide that the client is ready.
Excel Center also offers a family service; this is especially useful for those who are married and have children. Often our families are uneducated about the nature of addiction and what it entails. Our family service can not only help them in their knowledge about how they can help you to stay safe but can also unpack and process their own feelings and trauma associated with the addiction.
We also realize that receiving treatment in mid-life could be an indicator of a long-standing problem. It is certainly the case that many addicts maintain some semblance of a “normal life” while in active addiction. People often think that the longer someone has maintained an addiction that the harder it is to break. This is true for some people, but at Excel Center, we are highly skilled in helping middle-aged adults uncover and deal with the root cause of their addiction. We have seen people who have been using for 30+ years walk out through our doors to a successful and sustained recovery. We have faith that with the right combination of our program and our client’s willingness anything is possible.
If you are concerned about yourself or someone you care about possibly being an addict, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. We offer a range of services which are designed to suit every possible need of our clients.
