It is often said that the opposite of addiction is connection
One of the foundations for a successful recovery is a supportive community. This is key to avoiding feeling isolated, furthering self-discovery, and connecting with others who have the same goals as you.
At Excel Center, we realize that we are stronger together. Our clients will be given all of the tools they need for a successful recovery; being part of a recovery community allows them to practice using them in a controlled and compassionate environment. Recovery doesn’t mean missing out; it’s an opportunity for a brand new start. Your new life begins with us, and we want you to live it!
Our unique sober community is how we help our clients transition from our intensive programs back into day-to-day living. It brings together clinical services, recovery housing, lifelong alumni programming, family support services, and immersion into the 12-step community to create an all-around supportive environment for those recovering from addiction.
It is the integration of these parts which means that our recovery community has everything our clients need to taper down their support as necessary, and start living what they have learned during treatment.
Hundreds of happy clients have been a part of our community over the years, with research showing that remaining involved in a recovery centered community is linked to improved chances of a sustained recovery.
We are proud to be partnered with Milestone House, which has been one of the leading providers in sober living in New Jersey since 2002. Milestone House provides recovery-focused residential settings that encourages clients to strengthen their recovery by building their inner wisdom and consciousness.
Residents are given freedom, but strict boundaries around behavior and abstinence are enforced. It is important to find your feet in early recovery, but it is also important that people are supported in doing so. At Milestone House, clients are surrounded by others who are on the same journey as them. In recovery, there is strength in numbers. It is also a fantastic opportunity to build up a new social circle of sober-minded and compassionate friends. Milestone house provides weekly staff meetings, individual resident follow-ups, “cares & concerns” groups, peer recovery groups (both gender-specific and co-ed), spiritual workshops and studies, and art and music events. They encourage taking action in recovery as a healthy expression of body, mind, and spirit. Many residents of Milestone House still attend aftercare at our center.
Milestone House has three properties, all within walking distance of each other. Proximity helps unite the community and enhances the interaction between senior residents and newcomers. They offer apartments, as well as private and semi-private rooms for residents. Placement is determined by seniority and/or special needs. Apartments offer separate kitchens and bathrooms, while all other rooms offer 24-hour access to common areas. These common areas include full kitchen, office / TV lounge w/ computer, etc.
The Good Bean café in Dover serves fantastic coffee made from the freshest organic beans. We understand the need for a neutral meeting spot in which our clients can unwind and socialize in a safe and compassionate environment, and this café is the perfect spot for that. We also appreciate the benefits of employment and work experience in recovery. Often we find that our clients arrive at the Excel Center with low self-esteem, both professionally and personally (check). Employment and work experience is a brilliant way of countering this. It proves what we already know; people in recovery can be dependable, accountable, and fantastic employees and friends. It gives our clients a sense of purpose and improves self confidence.
When choosing employment in early recovery, it is important to make sure that it is not going to be triggering; many workplaces have a culture of drinking or drug-taking which could be damaging to someone so early on in their journey. The Good Bean Café prides itself on being a safe, recovery-informed environment, which is a fantastic way for our clients to re-integrate themselves back into the world of work without having to worry about triggers.
New Jersey has a fantastic array of 12 Step meetings which are completely free to attend. The 12 Steps is a spiritual program that promotes total abstinence and is built on altruistically helping others who are struggling with addiction or alcoholism. Anyone with a drug or alcohol problem is welcome to attend these meetings and share their experience, strength, struggles, and hope with compassionate former-addicts who understand exactly what they are going through. There are 12 Step meetings that are made specifically for different drugs, although meetings are not exclusive.
These meetings include:
- Alcoholics Anonymous
- Narcotics Anonymous
- Cocaine Anonymous
- Methamphetamine Anonymous
