How do you know when you or a loved one needs a substance abuse assessment? Coming to the reality that you or someone you love may have a substance abuse problem is a difficult process for many people. There is still much stigma surrounding substance abuse disorders. Despite significant advances in the addiction treatment field and in our understanding of the brain, many people still view addiction as a “moral weakness”. Many people think that individuals with a substance abuse problem should “just be able to stop”. However, for someone who has a substance abuse problem, more often than not, this is simply not the case. This archaic view of addiction deters many who may benefit from treatment from seeking treatment.
